Zimbabwe,
besides being one of the most beautiful countries in Africa, having wild
animals and Victoria Falls, it has some of the nicest outgoing people.
All of this is reflected in their artwork. One of their most spectacular
examples of their traditional artwork are their handpainted batiks. It
is a unique process and labor of love to make these batiks. The batiks
are bright, colourful and whimsical. The motifs are based on traditional
characters. The quality of the cotton is superb. It comes from the
Zimbabwe mills and it is of a double thickness. They are easy to wash
and iron.
They
come in a variety of styles and colours. They can be used as wall
hangings, tapestries, couch throws and tablecloths. We also have line of
duvets. We have our standard sizes and we can design to your colour and
style specification.

It
is a multi step process: First they start with high quality cotton. They
make a mixture of cornflour
“Sadza”
and water which goes into a squeegee bottle. They then draw with
this mixture onto the cotton a variety of motifs. Next it goes into the
sun to dry. Then it comes back placed on a large table and all the
artists gather around and handpaint with non-chemical paint. They then
run a uniform wax over and again in the sun to dry. As you can imagine
the yards of these small family run factories always look like washing
day.
At
this point the cloth is washed and delicately with a small knife the wax
is scraped away. Again into the sun to dry. When it is dry if is folded
up and baked in the oven, to set the process.
Finished. Now you have a stunning original handmade Zimbabwe
batik. Long-lasting. Unique.
